It would be hard to muster up the energy and drive to do something that you have no true bead on its' outcome or value in the big picture. It would be painful in fact. If all I had to do was write a compelling op-ed suitable for a national publication, I am confident I have the ability and could muster the willingness to do it. This post paints a picture, presents a microcosm of a much bigger issue that pervades every area of my life and the bigger the task, the more prevalent the paralysis. And it doesn't get much bigger than a dissertation. It is not uncommon in my field to feel unsure that what we spend so much time and energy on might not mount to a significant contribution to the academic conversation - something Dr. Blair talked about yesterday. That was encouraging. I am not alone in that respect. This is not about a simple editorial - it's about much bigger shit than that.Michael K. You have expressed a...Mike, now you've done it. You have expressed a fear that must now be faced. Most likely on purpose (even if subconsciously so). Dude....man up on this. Submitting that Op Ed. Is obviously something you really want to do. It's not what you want it to be yet. You know what to do bud. Take a shower, eat, ride that awesome bike, let your mind breathe and your moods swing and when it lands in that sweet spot go at it again. Give yourself three re-writes and then send that son-of-a-gun to the Post. You know you're gifted and have something to say. <br />I've certainly no right or sufficient standing in your world to voice my opinion here, but Dude you've got a gift.....don't let the perfectionism keep you from submitting. In a way it doesn't even matter if they publish your Op Ed. You will have looked that bad boy in the eyes and "went for it". Sometimes the gutsiest action is to move forward with something even if it isn't what you deem perfect. Plus, it would make your Harley proud! - DougSarchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16997336292791205111noreply@blogger.com
